A New Kind Of Loop

The Surrey Biofuel Facility is the first closed loop organics processing operation of its kind in Canada. The closed loop system creates multiple benefits for residents and businesses. It’s a loop that works for everyone.

1. Organic Waste Diversion

The closed loop begins with you! When you separate organic materials from your garbage and put them in your organics cart, you are the first step in the success of the closed loop system.

2. Organic Waste Collection

City of Surrey waste collection trucks collect organic waste materials put out at the curb, including kitchen waste and yard trimmings. This material is called feedstock. The feedstock is transported to the Surrey Biofuel Facility where the next step is science, or magic, depending on your point of view!

3. Organic Waste Transformation

The technology used at the Surrey Biofuel Facility is state-of-the-art and designed to process over 115,000 tonnes of organic waste per year. Through dry anaerobic digestion and tunnel composting organic waste is converted into two main outputs – biogas and Closed Loop Compost.

4. Reuse - Closing the Energy Loop

The biogas is upgraded to biomethane, a renewable natural gas (RNG) that is used to fuel the waste collection trucks, thereby creating net-zero carbon emissions system. In other words, by having the trucks run on RNG produced at the facility, we are effectively eliminating carbon emissions created by the waste collection fleet. The City will use the remaining RNG to fuel its fleet of maintenance vehicles, as well as convert the RNG into heat and electricity through Surrey’s District Energy System.

5. Reuse - Closing the Organics Loop

The Closed Loop Compost created at the facility is used to grow new B.C. agriculture products like fruits, vegetables, flowers and lawns. One day, these too will return to the facility as organic waste.
